DEVOTIONAL: The “Modern Church” And Sin.. The Elephant In The Room..Is It Confronting Or Conforming?

1 John 1:7-9
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

On a beautiful afternoon, it does not seem as though the topic would be sin, but that is precisely where the Lord has directed me to go.

In many churches today, sin is not an avenue many pastors are willing to take. Look around at the churches drawing droves of followers each week. Take a walk through the crowded parking lots (or perhaps a ride in a chick golf cart escort right to the front door) to sit in an uber-considered seating structure allowing maximum capacity. Breathe the strategically cooled or heated air, designed for comfort of the pastoral staff and praise team while also delivering a non-imposing temperature on those in the congregation.

Many churches have become production houses, dare I say, theaters, and those in attendance, an audience. People do not flock week in and out to hear Truth, but how well they are doing or how prosperous Jesus wants them to be, according to Hollywood leaders with slicked back hair, expensive suits and million dollar smiles or cool t shirts, sometimes proclaiming heretical messages.. 2 Timothy 4:4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Is the Bride of Christ is selling Herself out to be little less than a groupie at a concert? Are Christians going to worship or watch performances? Are the voices of the “praise teams” or instruments so obnoxiously loud they drown out everyone else? Certainly the Lord is glorified most by the voices of the few and loud?

Are God’s children there every week to watch dramas, hear funny antics or 10 minutes of videos with a few Scriptures thrown in just so they’ll remember they ARE at church. What is the purpose of church? Has the Creator become an afterthought? Is the Word not sufficient to teach from or are all of these other means of entertainment designed to capture attention, because the Pure Word is considered dry and irrelevant on It’s own merit? I think mankind has gotten distracted with himself/herself. Many churches claim to be “houses of worship”, but WHO or WHAT are the worshipping? It is with deep regret I believe far too many have fallen prey to PRIDE, going back to the true first sin, that of Lucifer. Just as he lured Eve, he is subtly seducing many unnecessarily. READ THE WORD! PRAY! VIGILANCE IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY!

Isaiah 14:12-14
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.

The churches of this age are seemingly consumed with making people “feel good” about God, themselves and those around them, completely ignoring the reality of SIN!

Psalm 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

There is far too much focus and concern in being “inclusive”, many dare not bring anything controversial to the pulpit like the matter that we are all wicked in need of a Savior!

Romans 12:22 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

I wish the shepherds in churches across the world would boldly remind the congregants about gratitude owed to our Precious Lord. He willingly paid the Ultimate Price. Not only did He spare us from the penalty of eternal damnation WE DESERVE in hell, but He works to prepare a Heavenly home for those who believe in Him.

2 Samuel 22:47 The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

John 14:3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Without recognition of the sinners we are, what need do we have of a Redeemer? We need to continually ask the Lord to search our hearts. Psalm 139:23-24Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

There may be many things we do that we either do not realize or do not want to admit are sins (Does sitting in front of the tv eating 1/2 bag of cookies qualify as gluttony? Do I really need the Lord to tell me the obvious answer there?). Let’s ask the Lord to reveal what we either cannot or do not want to see about ourselves so we can repent and for strength turn away.
Ignorance of the law excuses no man: Not that all men know the law, but because ’tis an excuse every man will plead, and no man can tell how to refute him.John Selden
English antiquarian & jurist (1584 – 1654)

The Lord KNOWS the Law, because He IS the Law. As Believers in Jesus Christ, we have access to His Word and we have the responsibility to know and obey the Lord. His Will, His ways are made clear throughout Scripture, thus our God is not unfair nor unjust, expecting us to guess or wonder what His expectations of us are.

If we are unclear about what are or are not considered “sins”, it is because we either have not earnestly studied or we rather not know, assuming that may allow some sort of forgiveness due to “ignorance”, plausible deniability. I have to believe that is a tragic misconception.

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Others yet believe they can ride on the coat tails of grace. Why not, since the Lord already died for our sins, KNOWING and ADMITTITNG we are sinners and there’s nothing we can really DO about that until we are united with Him, why not latch on to grace. Enjoy our sins because after all, we will be forgiven regardless, right?

A Believer is forever in the Hand of God, right? So deliberate engagement in sin, these people believe that the Lord’s Mighty Hand needs to be continually dipped down Ito redeem them into the miry pit where they’ve consciously chosen to plunge themselves ? The Word specifically tells us to put on the “new man”.

Nowhere have I found grace as an excuse to perpetually engage in our own willful behavior. We are to turn AWAY, not remain IN our sins! LOOK TO THE CROSS… How can we consider our Precious, bleeding and broken Lord suffering such agony and take the grace and forgiveness He gave His life for as license to indulge ourselves in sin?

Are some saying they don’t really seem to see a need to dye to self .. After all, Jesus understands we are sinners and incapable of true change, right? That’s is not what I read nor understand. He tells us we can do ALL THINGS through Him, even yield our evil and corrupt desires to follow His will! Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

SIN separates us from the Father. Through the blood of Jesus Christ ALONE, we are cleansed from all unrighteousness. Without the blood, the Father could not even look upon us!

On our own, our sin qualifies us for nothing less than eternal damnation in Hell, period. Without the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, we could not have access to the Heavenly Father, period! There is NO Salvation from hell and eternal salvation other than through the blood of Jesus, period!

Unless we recognize, admit, repent and turn from our sins, why do we need a Savior? Until we are called home, we will be sinners in need of forgiveness!

There is a certainty that Jesus willingly gave His life for us. Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a Man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Truthfully, I do not have the best attitude toward conviction! There are behaviors my flesh does not want to give up, but I know I am called to do so. I consciously CHOOSE to obey or continue outside of God’s will.

It is here the fruits truly show as vibrant and healthy or as shriveled and in need of the water of the Word to restore and revive them into evidencing a healthy witness of God’s work in my life. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

James 4:17Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

There are more than one tv series I really like, yet week after week, I get convicted they are not what a Christian should watch. I could easily go in my menu and stop recording it, but I consciously choose to indulge in my will than submit to the Lord’s (I would appreciate prayer in this). Outwardly I condemn it, yet inwardly I am condoning this behavior by participating. As a reader, Please forgive me as I trust The Lord is helping me with this struggle. I ask that you search your own life for things not glorifying the Lord and ask for His strength to forsake them.

Let’s look to the EMPTY cross, where our dying Savior offered forgiveness for those who tormented Him and continues forgiving every moment of every day. His mercy, His grace deserves so much than our disregard for our own sins. Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. …He’s our Creator, Healer, Redeemer, King, Master, Lord and so much more… What DOES it take to deserve our obedience and praise?

Father God,
Thank You for forgiveness of sins
We ask that You reveal our hearts to us
We know it will be painful, Lord
As we are desperately wicked
Please bring us to a humble and sincere realization and repentance
You recognize false humility
In And through You Alone
Are we able to turn from who we are to who You created us to be
We MUST see our sins for what they are
Understanding that because of them our Precious Jesus had to be nailed to the cross
The Perfect and Sinless Savior
Was crucified for this wicked world
For each one of us
Ho better to close our talk with You than with a verse from Your Inspired Word
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

About voicevessel bwc

First, and most importantly, I love Jesus Christ and I trust in Him as my Lord and Savior. I was raised in a Christian home by a godly dad and mom (who planned and had me in July before turning 42 in August), and 5 older siblings. My father passed away when I was 7 and my mother (who went to be with the Lord in 2005 at 81) never remarried. As a child, I was bullied at school, so I did not have many friends. I didn't want to tell my mom this because I knew she had enough worry being a widow at 50. I know what it is like to be lonely. As an adult, God showed me the value of His Friendship and has blessed me, too, with rich relationships with dear friends who also love the Lord. My husband and I (married 31 years as of 2020), have three wonderful, adult children and son-in-law as well as three darling grandchildren. Along with many others, my husband lost his job, but we refuse to be fearful or angry. The Lord has provided for us and we are so thankful for the opportunity to express gratitude through personal contact and occasional memories I share through writing. I believe the Lord has given me a venue to engage with others and a means to share His Word. Thank you for checking out my page. I hope you enjoy what you read. If there is anything positive or insightful in the devotionals (NOT CALLING MY WRITING "INSPIRED" by any means!), I give all credit and glory to Jesus Christ! On the other side of that, when something makes no sense, that's all me
