Devotion: Who’s Fasting..This Girl~Assessing The Heart’s Motivation

Matthew 6:17-19
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

FASTING, now there’s a topic some people do not want to broach. It is not really a favorite of mine because I like to eat and rarely find it appealing to give up anything I actually enjoy. Ouch! True confessions of a selfish sister!

I have been in this boat a few times, agreeing to fast, but the attitude I am suppose to have toward it increased my lack of patience.

What good was giving up something if no one but God knew? I mean, shouldn’t EVERYONE know I gave up chocolate, even if it was for one day? If I was asked out to eat, wasn’t I obligated to refuse on spiritual basis by letting others know that I was taking that time to fast and pray instead of indulging?

If I gave up a favorite show, was it actually a fast if I taped it to watch those episodes later? Was there truly a sacrifice or just postponement?

I too often wear my fasting like a flashing neon badge to inform others how devoted I am.

There are other times, shamefully, I think to myself, in a martyr’s mindset “I am going to REALLY glorify God! No way am I going to go around and brag about fasting!” Then it happens..somehow, some way, the topic comes up (yes, admittedly at my own prompting before), I bring up the topic to someone! Oops! It just slipped out and I happened to mention, ” Why yes, as a matter of fact, I am fasting now.” Shoot, did I say that! Really, wasn’t my heart’s intention all along to get the praise of man for my self discipline and sacrifice.
and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly
For those who ever had, currently are or are considering it, keep the last part of this verse near and dear, “and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly”. Dear Sisters, isn’t that alone incentive to keep it just between you and the Lord?

Almighty and Precious God
We thank You for times You call us to fast and pray

Please give us the self-restraint we need and focus
We ask that You will close our mouths when we start to talk about it with others
Attempting to draw attention to our efforts

Father God, please be glorified in our obedience to You
You Alone are God
It is You we want to please

Let us do as You tell us and not carry on with a martyr’s attitude
Instead, give us a look of refreshment
Not to bring attention to ourselves
But glory, honor and praise to You

Through deliberate denial
We ask that You hear our prayers and supplication
Raise us up, O God
We ask for strength and willingness to deny ourselves
And understand the strength and power
In denying our desires
For whatever it is we need to lift up to You

In the Name of Jesus

About voicevessel bwc

First, and most importantly, I love Jesus Christ and I trust in Him as my Lord and Savior. I was raised in a Christian home by a godly dad and mom (who planned and had me in July before turning 42 in August), and 5 older siblings. My father passed away when I was 7 and my mother (who went to be with the Lord in 2005 at 81) never remarried. As a child, I was bullied at school, so I did not have many friends. I didn't want to tell my mom this because I knew she had enough worry being a widow at 50. I know what it is like to be lonely. As an adult, God showed me the value of His Friendship and has blessed me, too, with rich relationships with dear friends who also love the Lord. My husband and I (married 31 years as of 2020), have three wonderful, adult children and son-in-law as well as three darling grandchildren. Along with many others, my husband lost his job, but we refuse to be fearful or angry. The Lord has provided for us and we are so thankful for the opportunity to express gratitude through personal contact and occasional memories I share through writing. I believe the Lord has given me a venue to engage with others and a means to share His Word. Thank you for checking out my page. I hope you enjoy what you read. If there is anything positive or insightful in the devotionals (NOT CALLING MY WRITING "INSPIRED" by any means!), I give all credit and glory to Jesus Christ! On the other side of that, when something makes no sense, that's all me
